Black Rob has always been an interesting character in the rap game to me. In case you've been wondering what he's been up to, here's a summary...
New album Black Rob Report out today. Robbing a hotel. Kidney problems. And also crashing his car into a cab then proceeding to tell the cab driver "Don't you know who I am? I'm Black Rob! I'm Black Rob from P.Diddy's crew! You know? Black Rob!" He also handed out a party invite and his phone number to the girl who was in the cab. Amazing.
The NY Daily News has a more in-depth article on him though. Here are some excerpts:
So why would such a privileged person break into a stranger's hotel room last November and admittedly rob the place of cash and jewelry?
In 1999, Rob was the first rapper sponsored by Sean Combs after the murder of Biggie Smalls. While the role gave him a lot to live up to, Rob's debut wound up selling 1 million copies and spawned the hit "Whoa!" (a cut Rob says can still net him $5,000 a night to perform at clubs).
Rob's history of incarceration stretches all the way back to age 12, when a robbery charge earned him four years at a juvenile prison. Last year, the Harlem rapper spent another spell in jail for allegedly failing to pay child support. Yet over the last five years, Rob's legal problems have taken a backseat to his health problems. Since 2000, Rob has battled a rare kidney disorder.
"I didn't go Hollywood in this time," he says in his defense. "I'm still Hollyhood."
