Rolling Stone Hot List: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Also on the Rolling Stone Hot List...
Clap - based in Brooklyn and Philadelphia - have already sold nearly 17,000 copies of their self-released debut, all thanks to word-of-mouth. And while major-label artists make only about a buck a record, the Clap guys are making a whopping eight dollars per disc - putting their take so far at more than $130,000. Not too shabby for an album recorded for less than ten grand and distributed by the band itself via countless trips to the post office.
That is amazing. 17,000 units without a label. I imagine that they're raking in even more $$$ from touring. Headlining Irving Plaza on New Year's Eve? Damn. Not bad at all.

Indie-bandet "Clap your hands say yeah" har inget skivkontrakt. De har
spelat in sin skiva själv, och säljer den själv. Många turer till
postlådan blir det. Istället för att få 7 kronor per såld skiva som de
flesta skivbolagsband får så tjänar de ... [Read More]

I bought the album at Other Music in Manhattan. How much money do they make per disc in that scenario? Are store sales included in the 17,000 sold? This little nugget of information, while interesting, seems rather incomplete.

i was also wondering how much they got when they sold at a place like OM. I think the 17K number would include stores but maybe I'm wrong. I figure a good chunk were sold at indie stores like OM, Kim's etc. It was the top seller at OM for a bit I remember.

CYHSY is a great band. I recently came across another band that has a similar sound. Ezra Furman, lead vocalist of Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, has a similar vocal style. If you want to check him out, you can download the song "My Soul Has Escaped My Body" here: http://mintyfresh.com/promo/Ezra/08%20My%20Soul%20Has%20Escaped%20From%20My%20Body%202-5-07.mp3
