Cool Calm Pete / Prince Paul show
I think my digital camera is broken. I have some pics stored on it, but the camera is not working. The pic to the right is from Prefix Photographer Saye Farrokhtala though and it's obviously much better than my crappy show pics.
Impose Magazine had a party/show at Pianos last night (Alec from CYHSY, Harlem Shakes, Cool Calm Pete, Prince Paul --- Cool Calm Pete Interview / Prince Paul Interview). I got to the venue just as the Harlem Shakes were finishing up to a packed house. I had bought a ticket over the web yesterday and received a confirm for the show, but then when I went to get my ticket my name was not found. No problem I thought since my friend/Prefix writer Jesse (watch for his feature article on Paul in the next XLR8R) had a +1. Of course he was on the list, but there was no +1. In any case I spoke with the manager of the venue and he believed me and let me in. I guess I'll have to see if the Harlem Shakes are worth the hype at a later date and I also missed the lead man of CYHSY (assuming he played).
Cool Calm Pete is a Queens bred emcee that was known in the past for his work in Babbletron and he also happens to design for NYC skateboarding mega institution Supreme. Honestly, I was unfamiliar with Pete aside from his work in Babbletron, but one of the Prefix writers recommended him and interviewed him. In a rare moment of good timing at Prefix, we actually just posted the interview with Pete now! So, up on stage is a Korean dude with Chase Kills deejaying and Jungle Mike? acting as his Pete's partner in rhyme. For a guy that said he didn't really like doing live shows, he put on a strong set. He rhymed about all sorts of stuff, but in general it was fun stuff and pretty funny. I dug the song about brushing teetht most. I also think he brought half of Queens to Pianos. It was a good vibe.
Prince Paul stepped on stage right after and basically stated he was going to wing it. Then he got Maggie Horn on stage who appears on an unreleased track from Itstrumental (see her comment correcting what I said about the track), and she sang while he dropped the track. Then Paul invited up Mr. Dead who also performed a song from Itstrumental. From then on Paul dropped hit after 90s hip hop hit (Dr. Dre, Native Tongues, Snoop, Xzibit, Blahzay Blahzay, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Geto Boys, Wu-Tang). The highlight for me was hearing Liquid Swords by the GZA. Damn. The crowd was going nutty and dancing like maniacs, very impressive considering it was a Tuesday night. If Prefix ever throws a party I want Paul to deejay.
As a side note, some girl said something to me and then proceeded to sort of dance with me. I say sort of because I'm arguably the worst dancer in the history of the world and I rarely dance with people because I'm so horrible. I felt bad that I didn't really dance with her. So I'm apologizing. Sorry about that.
