Devin the Dude lands in NYC

I was dead tired, but there was no way I was missing this show.  I met Devin the Dude last fall at a steak restaurant in Midtown when Prefix writer Rafael Martinez interviewed him.  I remember we talked about how he had never performed in NYC before.  I couldn't believe that he had never done a show out here.  Fast forward to tonight and every rapper's favorite rapper was here.  In fact Nas and Kelis were up in the place.

I arrived around 10:30P, doors were open at 9P.  I figured Spankrock had already performed, but I was wrong.  For the next 45 minutes the speakers were bumpin southern hip hop.  At one point the DJ dropped "Playa Playa" by Big Mike.  Holy Shit!  I used to bump Big Mike's 'Somethin' Serious' all the time when I was in high school.  Even though Devin was performing I still was surprised by this gem.  That alone almost made my night.  If the DJ dropped the title track "Something Serious" my head would've exploded.

Spankrock came on next and before they got on stage I was pretty tired and just wanted Devin to hit the stage.  I've been meaning to check Spankrock for a while, but I need sleep for my 9 to 5.  The thought of sleep got thrown out the window though.  Spankrock's dancers got on stage and started the show off with fireworks.  Jiggling butts, ridiculous rhymes and insane energy.  It was just dead up fun.

After a brief break, Devin came on stage to a very warm NYC reception. First song in and he's got a blunt and then before you know it he's passing it into the crowd.  Devin played a relatively short set filled with lots of older material, but the crowd seemed to know the words to his whole catalog. There were a lot of hardcore Devin the Dude fans and probably a lot of Houston transplants judging by the amount of Houston gear in the audience.  In any case Devin held it down and comfortably spit and crooned while the audience sang along.  Devin finished the set with "Anything" and I was already ready for him to come back to NYC.

P.S.  I don't understand how this guy is not going platinum.  Last year I told him that he could appeal to a huge audience the way Outkast does.  I told Devin this last year and I think he was just happy to be making a living rapping.  Just a real modest, humble dude.
